![]() "Yesterday, I was pleased to do something for an old friend of mine who has been kind to me on many past occasions. I then thought afterwards that though the act made me feel 'good' that one couldn't have a 'perfect day' without doing something for someone who will never be able to pay you back. I then recalled the words of my late mother whom I once berated when she gave a beggar in Manchester ten shillings many years ago. We had little money as a family and in my annoyance, I told her that it would be pint of beer her ten shillings would be buying, not a cup of tea. She said, 'You are probably right, Billy,' and then after a brief pause smiled and added, 'but then, we will never know. But how perfect it would be if it were tea, wouldn't it?'" Apparently my grandad (born in 1880!) was always being asked for money on the street for a cup of tea as he used to look quite smart. My mum told me the story that he never gave them the money but took them to a tea-room (they didn't have coffee shops in those days!) and bought them the tea himself. I've always thought I'd like to do this myself but have been too scared to do it! ;-)
