"Today would have been my father's birthday. He was one of the most modest men I ever knew; a characteristic of which I am seriously in short supply. I was 11 years old before he revealed to me that he had played football for his country in Ireland. On the day in question, being too poor to pay the £2. 10 shillings cost for a football shirt for me to play in the school football team, he went upstairs and presented me with the shirt that he used to wear when he played for Ireland. The shirt naturally buried me, but I have never felt as proud as that day or had a better spring in my step, while all the other boys were naturally envious."
