Thought for today:
"We are all hanging on in life for one thing or another. For some it might be the birth of their first child; another a marriage, a pay rise, the securing of one's first step on the property ladder or the obtaining of a job after a period of unemployment or even a possible inheritance or the maturing of an insurance policy.
Whatever we await, let us hope that the getting of it will improve our lives in significant measure in the way that we hope. One should be forever careful of what they wish for as they may get it!
How many folk have wished and wished, only to find that what they wished for could never be enough because it was never the answer to their perceived problem or matched the reality of their actual situation?
Consider for one moment the poor person who wins the lottery and his prize goes to his head so much that he turns it away from all things good and wholesome, destroys his good character, abandons his values and moral moorings in exchange of a life of souless hedonism. Can such a person call themselves 'a winner?' Consider a parent of a child who grows up into a child molester, mass murderer or tyranical despot. Wouldn't such a child have been better left unborn? Consider the houses that collapse, the marriages that fail or the jobs that robs one of all family time that can never be recouped whatever the salary attained. Wouldn't each and all of these wishes have been better had they never been granted in the first instance?
Finally there is the most ironic and futile wish of all; that of the Christian person with body racked with so much pain that they wish themselves dead; only to discover that when they enter the next life they find themselves in a firey furnace where the real pain is just starting?
Wish softly lest your wish come true in ways unimaginable. Far better to make the best of what is here and now and those things in life which can be relied upon for all of one's days like good family, loyal friendship, constant companionship and enduring love." William Forde: June 5th, 2014.
