"When a single lady falls in love with a married man who will not divorce, she can either forfeit her man and keep her respect or lose her respect and retain her man. Either way, her way forward involves taking backward steps for the remainder of their clandestine relationship.
At festive occasions during the year, she will cry lonely tears that will invariably go unheard by the man she loves. All she has to look forward to are a few past happy moments when she allowed all reason to be suspended in exchange for a few mere minutes of physical and emotional carnal pleasure.
In her constant role as 'add-on' in her man's life, she will never be able to display his gifts to her with public ease or express their feelings for each other to all and sundry in complete safety. Snatched moments here and there are the most she can expect from their contact; in the back seat of cars, walking in the dark or sullying the sterile rooms of seedy hotels. Such is the only 'quality time' she can look forward to.
While the married man will continue within the sham of his marriage to the ignorance of his wife and children, and in the process will retain his sanity and derive some pleasure from his duplicity of roles, his mistress will be left to grieve alone as she awaits his hurried and inconsistent contact: two-minute phone calls and the texts of endearment that he sends her on his second phone whenever his boredom threshold rises enough again to bring her image back into his mind.
For the mistress though, her future holds out no hope but further pain. It is a future filled with lonely Christmas Days and New Year's Eves without its celebration and good cheer; it is a future filled with heart ache, tears and permanent regret along with a bottomless void in one's life, a black hole of acute loneliness, depression and an array of sleeping pills and suicidal thoughts.
There is alas no way forward for 'the other woman' in any man's life and sadly no way back for any married man to undo what's been done to all innocent parties in any extramarital affair he engages in." William Forde: December 1st, 2013.
