Today’s song is, ‘Endless Love’. This song was written by Lionel Richie and was originally recorded as a duet between Richie and fellow R&B singer Diana Ross. In this ballad, the singers declare their ‘endless love’ for one another. It was covered by R&B singer, Luther Vandross with fellow R&B singer Mariah Carey, and by country music singer Shania Twain. Richie's friend (and sometimes co-worker) Kenny Rogers has also recorded the song. Billboard has named the original version as ‘The Greatest Song Duet of All Time’.

‘Forever, ‘Eternal’ and ‘Endless’ all represent descriptions of illusionary concepts in this everyday world we share (excluding all notion of heaven to come which is believed by many of religious persuasion).
This song ‘Endless Love’ recalls for me, a quotation by Jean-Paul Sartre who lived and died between 1905-1980 in Paris France. Sartre was a French philosopher, playwright, novelist, political activist and literary critic. Sartre was one of the key figures in the Philosophy of Existentialism and Phenomenology.
Existentialism is a philosophy that emphasizes individual existence, freedom and choice. It is the view that humans define their own meaning in life and try to make rational decisions despite existing in an irrational universe. His work has greatly influenced sociology, critical theory and literary studies since the 20th century. He was awarded the 1964 ‘Nobel Prize in Literature’.
Sartre once quoted; “Life has no meaning, the moment you lose the illusion of being eternal”. In short; Sartre would advocate that life means to you what you want it to mean; as you define it to be, as you experience it. Sartre believed that you hold the key to your own happiness and misery, not fate, not circumstance; nothing but the fate you believe in and the circumstance you imagine or conspire to bring about.
So, ‘endless love’ might just be a possibility… ‘If you believe it to be!’
Today’s song is dedicated to my Facebook friend, Loretta Milner and her husband, Peter, of Leeds; both of whom I wish ‘endless love’. Bill x
