My song today is ‘Before I Met You’. This song was recorded by Dolly Parton and Porter Wagoner. Dolly’s career started singing in the Porter Wagoner band. At the time, Porter was the biggest name in the Country and Western singing scene. When, however, the day Dolly became more popular than Porter, that was the day they split up and went their own way.
Dolly has had the best-selling, one of the longest, and most profitable of musical careers in the history of C&W. She has recorded more albums than most singers have recorded singles records. Her career includes 63 studio albums, consisting of 46 solo studio albums, (13 studio album with Porter Wagoner, two studio albums with Emmylou Harris and Linda Ronstadt, one studio album with Loretta Lynn and Tammy Wynette and one studio album with Kenny Rogers), six live albums, five soundtrack albums, one extended play, and approximately 183 compilation albums worldwide. She is the best-selling female country music artist of all time, with over 160 million albums sold worldwide. Parton has released 208 singles and 63 music videos during her six-decade career. She has also released 10 promotional singles and had four charted B-sides. Parton has composed over 5,000 songs throughout her career. The total number of individual song titles she has recorded and released is 945, totalling over 1,100 individual recordings when the studio and live tracks are combined.
After releasing two unsuccessful singles as a teenager, Parton signed a recording contract with Monument Records in 1964, and moved to Nashville, Tennessee shortly afterward, releasing a series of singles on the label. In mid-1974, Parton split from Wagoner and his show to expand her career as a solo artist, writing and recording the Number1 hit, ‘I Will Always Love You’ as a tribute to Wagoner. Following her departure from Wagoner's show, Parton branched out into pop music in 1977.
