"Whatever we remember in old age, we never forget our first kiss. Each of us stay mortal until our first kiss, after which we become slaves to our heart. My mother used to tell me when I first started to take an interest in teenage girls, 'Billy, whatever you do, never allow yourself to be kissed by a fool. Worse still, never be fooled by a kiss.'
I was brought up believing a man's kiss to be his signature. It is what tells any woman how important he is to her. The final piece of motherly advice I received on he subject of kissing was, 'Certain kisses can send you to an unknown world, so always stay grounded, Billy. Let her close her eyes, but keep yours open at all times, just in case she's laughing at you unknowingly.'
I must confess that I have always felt the magic in a kiss. I have learnt that a kiss has the power to wet the eyes, dry the tears or wipe out the years that have passed since you last embraced. I see a kiss as being nothing less than a design of nature which is used when all speech becomes superfluous and touch is at its most tender. Like the source of happiness, a kiss must be shared to be enjoyed at all.
I remember once reading a line of poetry that said, 'Soul meets soul on lover's lips.' This got me thinking about one particular practice that is common to all prostitutes; a refusal to allow their clients to kiss them on the lips. Anything else is up for sale, but kissing on the lips is a definite 'no no.' The reasoning for this is that they are selling sex and kissing has absolutely nothing to do with sex outside one's marriage or a loving partner relationship. Prostitutes recognise kissing as being an emotional transmission and while they are perfectly happy to sell their bodies, their hearts remain the sole domain of their loved ones!
How wonderful a thought it is, that in the afterlife we will be reunited with our soul mate and be able to kiss each other once more without the need to come up for breath." William Forde: April 6th, 2016.
